What matters more than the label is the quality of the execution — whether the stitching is even, the lasting is precise, the leather is finished cleanly, and the sole is attached securely. These things are visible and tactile if you know what to look for.

What to look for in-store

The lasting: Look at the inside of the shoe. The insole should be smooth and the tack marks from lasting should be covered cleanly. Rough, unfinished interiors suggest speed over craft.

The stitching: The stitching along the welt or outsole should be even, tight, and consistent. Irregular stitching is a sign of either poor machine calibration or rushed hand work.

The leather: The upper leather should have a consistent surface with natural variation in the grain. An overly uniform, plastic-looking surface suggests corrected-grain or embossed leather. Press the leather lightly — it should feel supple and have some give.

The heel counter: The back of the shoe should hold its shape when you press it. A soft or collapsing heel counter means the shoe will lose its structure quickly.
