The Capsule Shoe Wardrobe Every Indian Man Needs

Most men own more shoes than they need and fewer good ones than they should. The solution is the same as with clothing: a small number of genuinely useful, high-quality shoes that work across occasions, rather than a large number of cheap ones that work for almost nothing. This is the capsule shoe wardrobe.

For the Indian context specifically — where occasions range from formal offices and traditional ceremonies to casual weekends and hot weather — here's what actually covers the ground.

The five shoes that cover everything

1. Black cap-toe Oxford

The most formal dress shoe in existence. A black cap-toe Oxford in full-grain leather covers weddings, funerals, very formal offices, black-tie events, and any situation where you need to be unambiguously dressed correctly. This is not an everyday shoe — it's a formal shoe kept in good condition for when nothing else will do. One pair, well maintained, lasts a decade.

2. Brown or tan full brogue Derby

The most versatile dress shoe you can own. A full brogue Derby in brown or tan works with suits, chinos, smart jeans, and almost everything in between. The broguing and wingtip pattern gives it character that a plain shoe doesn't have. It ages beautifully in full-grain leather. If you're going to invest in one shoe, this is arguably the most useful starting point for most Indian men's wardrobes.

3. Leather penny loafer

A black or dark brown leather penny loafer handles the gap between formal and smart-casual. It's easy to put on, works without socks in summer, goes from office to evening without looking out of place, and is more comfortable for long days than a lace-up. This is a high-frequency shoe — one you'll reach for constantly.

4. White leather or canvas sneaker

One clean, quality sneaker for genuine casual occasions. Not a running shoe pressed into casual use, but a sneaker chosen for its looks. This covers weekends, travel, and any setting where even a loafer would look overdressed.

5. Sandal or chappals

For Indian summers, a quality leather sandal or well-made chappal is not optional — it's practical. This doesn't need to be expensive but should be made from genuine leather or quality rubber and hold its shape. It covers casual summer occasions and anything that simply requires your feet to be comfortable in the heat.

What this wardrobe doesn't include

Brown Oxfords. You don't need them if you have a brown Derby brogue — the Derby covers most of what the Oxford does and does it more versatilely. Buy the Oxford in black first, and only add a brown Oxford if you find yourself wanting something more formal than the Derby for specific occasions.

Multiple loafer colours. One good leather loafer in black or dark brown. Add a second colour only once the first has proven its usefulness.

The principle behind the capsule
